New standards in weight saving for packaging machines

The "New York Times" is one of the most highly circulated newspapers in the USA. Every day several million copies leave the printing plant for distribution around the metro NYC area. The presses on which they are run are equipped with line shaft couplings from R+W. These backlash free connecting elements transmit torque over distances of up to 6 meters without backlash or vibration.

A special support system internal to the flexible bellows prevents excessive misalignment from being applied and transfers the weight of the intermediate tube to the end hubs, improving reliability. Light weight carbon fiber intermediate tubes are also an option in these coupling systems.

Because these line shaft couplings are completely wear-free, the maintenance intervals of the machines can be extended, benefitting their economic efficiency.

High speed in the automotive industry

The demands placed on machining centers in terms of speed and precision are constantly increasing. This is particularly true in the automotive industry. Here for example, profile grinding machines for truck and car camshafts need to produce extremely smooth surfaces with highly accurate geometry.

Just in time production, which is standard in this industry, requires high processing speeds to be able to keep up with fluctuating demand. Speed in machining is directly related to drive power, but with increasing power comes greater potential for vibration, which works to the detriment of machining quality.

To combat this issue, many manufacturers use R+W elastomer couplings with high strength aluminium hubs and engineered polymer inserts. These damp vibration while compensating for inevitabla shaft misalignment and operating without backlash or wear. Despite their being backlash free, the couplings remain easy to slide together, which facilitates the assembly process. Elastomer couplings from R+W thus increase machine service life and reduce maintenance efforts.
